The Houghton County Historical Society recently announced the receipt of a $100,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The funds will be used to reconstruct a copper grinding mill on the foundation of the old Calumet & Hecla Mining Company mill in Lake Linden. The new museum building will contain exhibits where visitors will be able to view copper ore at various stages of the milling process.

When fully operational, the museum complex will offer walking and internet-based tours, old mill equipment will be displayed, and the old steam locomotive (used prior to 1920) will carry visitors around the museum complex.

The ultimate goal is the development of a virtual tour of the mill operations as well as a virtual tour of the old French-Canadian milling town based

on museum maps, photos and surviving antique equipment.

All aspects of the finished project are intended to be technically correct and the museum is expected to attract a significant number of new visitors to the area. Oct. 2nd 2003
