Kennecott Minerals: Jon Cherry

If mining develops from current exploration in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, what kind of employment might it create?
The Eagle Project would provide a variety of jobs including construction, underground miners, maintenance, mechanics, operators, clerical, administrative, engineering, technicians and a variety of service sector industry opportunities.

How long might those jobs last?
If the mine were constructed, the construction period would last approximately 2 years followed by 6 to 8 years of operations and 2 years of closure related activities.

Who might be hiring? What kind of salaries would they provide?
Kennecott Eagle Minerals Company would be hiring to fill those positions required to construct and operate an underground mine at Eagle. Other service sector industries will also likely be hiring to help with increased demand for services.

When might a mine open?
The current schedule for the Eagle Project is to complete the permitting process and begin construction by mid-year 2006 and begin operations by mid-year 2008.

Where would these jobs be located?
The Eagle Project is located approximately 20 to 25 miles northwest of Marquette in Marquette County.

How can one be prepared to take such employment?
One can be prepared for these types of employment opportunities by educating oneself in a specific trade or field of activity.

What might be the total economic impact?
Kennecott is currently performing a socio-economic analysis of the potential impact this project might have on the local area. Those results will be made public early next year. Listed below are some preliminary estimates on key economic factors:

Estimated Direct Employment - 120 - 140
Indirect employment 300 - 400
Annual Direct Employment Payroll - $7million per year
Initial Capital Investment - $100million
Life of mine+construction+closure is 10 to 12 years
Local Employment Goal - ~75%

If no mines develop in our area are their still opportunities in the mining industry? There are a number of employment opportunities in mining throughout the country whether it is in hard rock, coal, sand and gravel or some commodity. The thing to remember is that you have to mine/work in the general area of where the resource is located.
