The mission of this web site is to provide a forum for information,
proposals, and ideas on the use and development of a mineral mine in Lake
Township of Menominee County Michigan so you can make more informed decisions
about a course of action. The motivation for it came out of the confusion
and discord caused by lack of understanding and potential misuse of our
valuable natural resources.

| In 1994 the Michigan legislature passed a new
act to cover laws pertaining to the use and protection of our natural resources.
This Act is called the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act
(NREPA). This law replaced the 1982 Act written for the same purpose.
Parts of the 1982 Act covered Surface and underground mining and mine exploration. For some reason the 1994 act omitted the term underground or sub surface. Our State officials who enforce the law at the DNR and DEQ have wondered about this oversight and potential for problems. They see it as a possible weakness in the law that protects our natural resources and public good. Other knowledgeable people agree. Those who are strong environmental proponents are extremely concerned and even mining company officials say it wouldn't hurt to address the situation. |
part
631 of the NREPA deals with Information and Instruction for Permits
in Metallic Mining, and leaves out underground mining.
Only the legislature can change the law so if you feel it would be good to do so please encourage your elected state representatives to do so by clicking on this Take action! link. for District 108 contact: State Representative Tom Casperson
ask him to Please draft legislation to amend the 1994 Act 451, the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act: part 631 to include underground mines. |
part 625 of the NREPA deals with Mineral Well Permit Information and Instruction. |
