Casperson bill requires state permit for underground mining
Michigan residents will have an improved chance of providing input regarding proposals for new underground mines in the state under legislation introduced by state Rep. Tom Casperson.

House Bill 5324 puts underground mines on the list of activities in the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act that require a permit from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

“I’ve been talking about the mining issue in the Upper Peninsula with the DNR, DEQ and other state agencies, as well local officials and residents, since early spring,” said Casperson, R-Escanaba. “It’s a very complex situation that I’m continuing to work on, but one thing we have discovered is that underground mining was overlooked in the DEQ permitting process established by the 1994 protection act.”

Part of that process includes the potential for public hearings on issuing the permit, where local residents could submit their input on the proposed project.

The bill now goes to the House Committee on Agriculture and Resource Management.
